Memphis is a beautiful city in Tennessee that has rich history, colorful culture, diverse population and great natural resources. All those elements have made this largest city in Tennessee become one of the top tourist destinations in the United States. Known as the city of Blues and Rock n’ Roll, Memphis offers more than just great music, but also lots of great tourist attraction. Some of the best tourist attractions in Memphis include:
Beale Street – This is the most popular area in whole of Memphis and also the busiest one. Beale Street is the place where you can find various unique shops, live music venues, restaurants, cafés, lounges, and many other great hangout places. This street stretches for about 2 miles long from the Mississippi River to the East Street. The area is best known for its blues clubs that offer great music, but it’s also known for its historical sites like the Orpheum Theater and the Beale Street Baptist Church.
Graceland – This was the home of Elvis Presley, which then turned into a museum in 1982. Every year more than 650 thousand people visit this mansion, not only Elvis’ fans, but many people who don’t even know anything about rock n’ roll also visit this mansion just for its historical values. Located on top of a hill, this huge mansion is a two-story building built with the colonial revival style. Here you can find various memorabilia from the King of Rock n’ Roll, including his Jungle Room, Racquetball Building, Meditation Garden, Trophy Building, Automobile Museum, private jets and his grave.
National Civil Rights Museum – Located in downtown Memphis, this museum is a complex of a museum building, Lorraine Motel and other facilities. The location was chosen because it’s the place where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated during his speech at the Lorraine Motel. This museum displays the history of the civil rights movement in America.
Sun Studio – This is a very famous recording studio that was opened in 1950 and still operating until today. Sun Studio was found by Sam Phillips, a rock n’ roll superstar at the time. In the 50s a lot of legendary musicians recorded their songs in this studio, such as Little Milton, B.B King, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Ray Harris, Roscoe Gordon, James Cotton, and many others, including Elvis Presley. In fact, many people consider this studio as “the birth place” of the King, because this is the place where Elvis recorded his first hit.
Stax Museum of American Soul Music – This museum is a replica of the Stax recording studio and dedicated to soul music. The studio itself was operating from 1957-1975, going through some of the most significant changes in America, including the civil rights movement. Stax studio became the symbol of integration as musicians with different skin colors worked to create music together.
Memphis Rock n’ Soul Museum – Another interesting music-related attraction in Memphis. In this museum, you can learn a lot about the history of rock n’ roll. Today it has become one of the most visited museums in the USA with about 200,000 visitors every year.
